DILI, 2 december 2021 (TATOLI) – Parliament Committee (F) for Health, Social Security, and Gender Equality urged the Ministry of Health to implement rigorous regulations to tightly control the border crossing points at the land border zones and airports to prevent the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 with high infection risk from entering the country.

“We have had heard about this new variant of Covid-19 spreading across the globe, including Indonesia and Australia. Therefore, the government needs to tighten our border, particularly the crossing points to prevent Omicron from entering the country. Mandatory quarantine should be applied to those who want to enter the country,” the President of the Parliament Committee F. Noe da Silva ‘Buka-Tuir’ told TATOLI at National Parliament, on wednesday.

He said it is important for the government to keep spreading information about the threats of the Omicron, and asking the communities to keep social distancing, washing hands regularly, and wearing face masks.

Buka-Tuir also urged those community members who hadn’t received the vaccines to be vaccinated against Covid-19 especially the new Omicron variant.

He said the approval of Timor-Leste’s health law would pave way for the relevant entities to ensure good public health for everyone.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Omicron coronavirus variant poses a high risk of infection surges around the globe.

The Omicron variant of Covid-19 could be ‘500 percent more infectious than Delta’

On Saturday (27/11) the World Health Organization (WHO) classified Omicron as a variant of concern, amid fears it could potentially be more transmissible and able to evade immune protection, ABC reported.
