DILI, 10 december 2021 (TATOLI)-The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Jakarta in collaboration with and Centro Nacional Chega! I.P (CNC) will promote and preserve the history and peace education among people through “Digitalization of Chega National Centre for Conflict Reconciliation and Peace Building in the Timor – Leste”.
The program is funded by the South Korean Government through Korea Organization International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The program is established during the meeting between CNC and UNESCO at the Novo Turismo hotel Dili with the purpose to strengthen the national accountability and capacity to build the country‘s better future in peace, justice, and prosperity for the country’s contribute to Conflict Reconciliation and Peace Building in the Region and it’s beyond.
The meeting also initiates the establishment of the Project Steering Committee (PSC) and its composition as well as clarifies roles and responsibilities for the sustainable and systematic support of the project‘s implementations and achievements.
The Director of UNESCO in Jakarta and UNESCO representative to Timor – Leste Mohamed Djelid informed that UNESCO also build a Sustainable Management System of Chega! establishes the national hub for quality history and peace education and strengthens the national and regional capacities and partnerships for conflict reconciliation, peacebuilding, and state-building for sustainable development.
“ The promotion of history through education is at the heart of UNESCO‘s mission. UNESCO’s approach to educating peace is multidimensional, its links education with a range of activities that address the root causes of conflict resolution, for human security to sustainable development. UNESCO will continuously support the Government of Timor- Leste that the peacebuilding and learning will never stop,’’ Djelid told a reporter in Hotel Nova Torismo Lecidere, Dili today.
The Ambassador of South Korea to Timor – Leste, Kim Jeong Ho said South Korea wishes to help Timor-Leste‘s government in digitalization of the archive preservation for history and peace education in Timor – Leste.
“ To recover and the damages and the pains caused from occupation to independence in our history, we have to take actions together to cultivate proper history memories and awareness for our next generation. With the support of quality peace and history education, the Government of South Korea will help the young generation in Timor – Leste to sustain on their own feet,’’ said Jeong Ho.
At the same place, the Director of CNC Hugo Maria Fernandes informed that the aim of the meeting today is to update the information about the donation of $ 5 million that had been donated by KOICA to CNC last month to digitalize the archive preservation for history peace and education in Timor – Leste.
“ One of our mandates is to guarantee the preservation of memory and history of Timor – Leste, create a culture of peace and respect for human rights and inclusive society to contribute to achieving sustainable peace and development in Timor Leste. On behalf of the Government of Timor – Leste and CNC We thanked the Government of South Korea for funding support and UNESCO Jakarta for the partnership, We are looking forward to projecting implementation,’’ said Fernandes.
Fernandes added, a total of 529 direct beneficiaries from three different target groups such as Center National of Chega! staff, History Educational, and basic Education officials of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoYS) and 155,832 students at 495 schools will benefit from this program.
