DILI, 30 december 2021 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres ‘Lu Olo’ offered his special New Year’s wishes, calling on each citizen, relevant entities, and government to step forward with a new look to strengthen the economy of the nation to reduce the poverty in the country.

Lu Olo said Timor-Leste needs to diversify its economy in 2022, by capacitating the private sectors in the country.

“Next year, we need to reduce poverty and inequality in the country,” President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres ‘Lu Olo’ deliver his New Year’s wishes in a press conference, held at the Presidential Palace, in Dili, on thursday.

Lu Olo said Timor-Leste also needs to strengthen its health and education system in 2022.

“Majority of the families across the country have no adequate conditions for their children to learn and study at home due to lack of modern technologies. We need to improve the condition for the children and the youths to study independently at home to eliminate social inequality in the country,” he said.

In addition, Lu Olo  also stressed that Timor-Leste needs to ensure its food self-sufficiency: “It means that we need to produce our own food to ensure our food sovereignty. Thus, we need to have significant investment in the agricultural sector as well as paying special attention to the farmers to sell their agricultural products to the market.”

“The government needs to have a big investment on the Tais fabric production as it has already recognized by the UNESCO as the intangible cultural heritage.”

Lu Olo believes that Timor-Leste will go through difficulties and challenges in 2022.

“Good day. New Year is coming. Tomorrow night, as Timorese people across the country gather with family and friends, I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year,” President Lu Olo said.
