Local Author releases poetry book that recalls the struggle of heroes, reflects TL’s political situation

DILI, 11 january 2022 (TATOLI) – The writer and Director of the Center for Arts and Cultural Studies (CECA), at the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL), Vicente Paulino has published another poetry book under his name entitled: ‘Alma Guerreira Timorense’, aiming to motivate Timorese people to become writers.

“This poetry book aims to motivate Timorese people to appreciate the reality, and the social life situation to write poetry books. I write my poetry based on direct observation of the reality of life. This book recalls the national heroes’ struggle for the national liberation,” Paulino told TATOLI, at UNTL, in Dili.

He said that the book narrates the participation of the country’s fighters, such as Francisco Xavier do Amaral and Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão: “The book tells the story of the contribution of the national heroes to the independence of the nation as well as describing their personality in a poetic form.”

Paulino said that the content of the book also narrates the contribution of Timorese women and farmers during the struggle for national liberation.

During the 24-year resistance: “Farmers prepared food for the guerrillas. The guerrillas who took the food would notify the farmers by leaving a sign to indicate that the food was taken by them. It’s all mentioned in my book.”

Paulino said his work also highlights the support and solidarity of the International Figures, such as the Former President of Indonesia BJ Habibie and Max Stahl, including Timorese missionaries Bishop Dom Martinho Gusmão, Dom Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, and Pope John Paul II.

“When the former president of Indonesia died, I decided to write about him. In my book, I also included Max Stahl’s contribution to Timor-Leste’s independence,” he stated.

Barreto also mentioned that the book also recounted the immoral behavior of the rulers in the process of the State Building.

The author stressed that his poetry describes the current political situation in the country: “This poetry book also provides a critical reflection on the life reality facing Timor-Leste, such as the table of the House Speaker was turned upside down in a clash between MPs at National Parliament,” he said.

He recalled that it took three years to finalize the book which he started writing in 2018.

Paulino urged Timorese youth and students to adopt reading habits, as it helps them to come up with new ideas when writing a book.

“Reading develops and enriches our ability to express any reality of life that we observe. From reading we transform the life reality into a written form: “It’s time for the students and young people to wake up and begin reading,” he appealed.

Timorese poet, Abe Barreto, wrote in the preface to the book ‘Alma Guerreira Timorense’, states that the author, once again, produces a beautiful piece of work among other national poets.

“The Timorese warrior souls are reincarnated in the soul of the poet Vicente Paulino. It is a work of pride for us Timorese. As a poet, he has the heroic spirit,” said Barreto.
