DILI, 17 january 2022 (TATOLI)—The President of Dili Municipal Authority (PAM), Guilhermina Filomena urged the community in Dili, to clean the environment, to prevent cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).
Based on data, almost all DHF cases came from the sub-districts of Dom Aleixo and Cristo Rei, but the community has no awareness to keep the environment clean. Therefore, the local Government recommended cleaning the environment to prevent dengue fever.
“We urge the communities in Dili to contribute to maintaining the cleanliness in Dili to prevent dengue disease, we know that dengue cases have come from garbage, mosquitoes will nest in the garbage, therefore I urge the communities of Dili to be aware of disposing of the garbage in the trash that has been prepared by the government,”Filomena told Tatoli in Merkadu Lama, Dili.
Filomena explained Timor-Leste has set a decree-law number 3/2016 concerning the rules for waste disposal and payment of fine for those who do not dispose of the waste properly, but it had not been implemented because it was still in the socialization stage.
“The government has issued decree number 3/2016 concerning the payment of waste taxes and regulations for waste disposal hours, but it has not been implemented optimally because it is still in the socialization phase,” She said.
Filomena added that the disposal of waste from Dili to Tibar has been regulated in Decree 26/2016 which is reinforced by the Government Diploma number 32/2017.
“Waste in Dili is transported to Tibar by official Sanitation of Dili at 04: am and noon as much as 2 times, but now the number of residents in Dili has been increased thus we optimally lose the control and garbage collection vehicles are very limited to collect the garbage,” said Filomeno.
To resolve the waste issue, the Government has allocated $2.3 million and the local Government of Dili will work with village heads to provide garbage cans in each village to the community to dispose of their waste properly.
