CoM approves decree-law on distribution of second phase food basket

DILI, 09 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers approved a decree-law, presented by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (MCAE) to implement the second phase Food Basket Program.

The distribution of the basic basket aimed to support the neediest people and to support the nation’s economic recovery plan.

The decree-law would allow the Government of Timor-Leste to continue distributing the essential basic needs to the neediest families. In addition, the food basket program would also motivate the local food producers to continue producing their products and also to ensure the functioning of the local economy operators.

The second phase of the Food Basket Program has a value of up to US$50 for each member of the beneficiary households.

The basic basket consists of basic food and essential personal hygiene products. The distribution of the food basket would take place during 2022. The distribution would be made according to the registration book of each eligible family.

Citizens, as well as the respective members of the household, who are holders of sovereign bodies and holders of management positions or heads of departments of the direct and indirect Public Administration of the State, are excluded from the lists of beneficiaries. All citizens and respective members of households with a monthly income of more than US$500 are also excluded.

The Government of Timor-Leste launched the first Food Basket Program on october 27, 2020, at Sabuli village, in Metinaro, Dili.
