DILI, 22 february 2022 (TATOLI) –Twenty-four European observers arrived in Timor-Leste today to follow the presidential elections taking place on 19 march.

The Citilink plane, carrying the team of international observers, landed on the runway of Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport, in Comoro, Dili, at around 11:30 am.

As Tatoli learned from sources, the delegation is made up of 12 women and 12 men from 17 European countries and will be headed by the deputy head of the mission, Irishman Alexander Gray.

According to official European Union press sources for the electoral observation mission, Maria Telleria, a delegation of 26 elements was initially expected to arrive in Timor-Leste, but two would not travel due to problems related to personal documentation in a European airport.

Maria Telleria assured, however, that as soon as the situation is settled, the two elements will soon leave for Dili.

The Ambassador of the European Union in Timor-Leste, Andrew Jacobs, said, in turn, that the international delegation will remain in the country until the end of may.

“If there is a second round, the team will follow your entire electoral process until there is a winner,” Andrew Jacobs told Tatoli at the Hotel Timor in Dili.

According to the diplomat, the team includes legal analysts, politicians, press officers, observers and logistics coordinator, among others.

The President of the National Elections Commission (CNE), José Belo, had already said that the CNE and the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) would work in partnership with the European Union delegation at national and municipal levels to monitor the electoral process.

José Belo was pleased at the time to work with various international organizations such as the European Union to oversee the democratization process in Timor-Leste.
