DILI, 22 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Timorese government decided to cancel the non-oil sector business forum in Dubai that was scheduled for february 24 due to the worsening of the epidemiological situation caused by the Ómicron variant.

According to the Executive Director of TradeInvest of Timor-Leste, Arcanjo da Silva, the Executive has already executed around US$30,000 in preparation for the event.

The official expressed his concern about the cancellation of the event in Dubai, as he had invited the private sector to attend the forum.

“The TradeInvest team has already returned [to Timor] on the 18th of february, after having completed the preparations for holding the forum in Dubai together with the Dubai Chamber. However, it was forced to cancel the non-oil sector business forum, as 12 other countries did likewise. The cancellation is due to the worsening epidemiological situation with the increase in the number of cases of the Ómicron variant in Dubai,” Arcanjo da Silva told Tatoli in Colmera, Dili.

The Government had planned to send a team led by the Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry, the current President of the Dubai Expo Authority and the Minister of Transport and Communications to Dubai on 22 february.

“However, the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, only authorized the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs to participate in the forum for reasons of savings”, he added.

Arcanjo da Silva recalled, on the other hand, that the Government made 40 thousand US dollars available for TradeInvest to start preparations for the event in question. The budget does not include travel by Executive members.

According to the director, if the forum took place, 20 investors would participate, in addition to more than 100 representatives from different countries.

The world exhibition takes place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, between october 1, 2021 and march 31, 2022, with the participation of more than 190 countries.

It is recalled that the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Joaquim Amaral, had previously said that the forum, in the context of Expo Dubai, would be an excellent opportunity for Timor-Leste to receive new foreign investors.

According to the minister, Timor-Leste’s presence at the world exhibition allows it to present all the potential that the country can offer to visitors.
