DILI, 08 march 2022 (TATOLI)– The National Logistics Center (CLN) informed that the process of purchasing 5,000 tons of rice from Vietnam will arrive in Timor-Leste (TL) in early april 2022.

CLN’s Chief Advisor, Joanico Gonçalves said that previously it was planned to buy directly from Thailand because of the cooperation between the two Governments. However, responding to the emergency requirement of food stock at the national level, CLN offered the opportunity for Timorese companies to procure and supply the rice from Vietnam. The procurement of rice from Thailand is not realized yet.

“All the rice was bought from Vietnam,” Joanico Gonçalves told Tatoli exclusively on this monday.

Currently, there are three companies dealing with Vietnam to purchase and import rice, such as Charly UNIP Lda, Esmelia UNIP Lda, and Santos UNIP, Lda.”The companies will provide Bank credit letters from TL National Trade Bank (BNCTL). The letter will be sent to Vietnam. It is ensuring the bank will provide payment processes to Vietnam and ensuring the rice will be imported to TL,” he said.

To ensure food stock is not lacking for the national consumer, the imported rice stock is an alternative to respond to emergency needs. Although the current rice stock is sufficient and available in some warehouses in Maliana, Bobonaro and Natarbora, Manatuto. 535 tons of rice stock is available.

“CLN must be guaranteed that the stock foods must be responding in any emergency situation, especially the county can be affected by global issues such as covid-19 and even natural disasters that naturally happen in the country,” He said.

It is known that in July 2020, the Government allocated 15 million USD to purchase 30,000 tons of rice from Vietnam.
