Ukraine thanks Timor-Leste on its support at the international forums

DILI, 10 march 2022 (TATOLI) – The Ambassador of Ukraine to Malaysia, Olexander Nechytaylio has thanked Timor-Leste through the Minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Adaljiza Magno, on its supporting to Ukraine in the declaration at the international forums due to the current situation faced by the nation.

“The Ambassador briefed the Minister about the current situation in Ukraine and thanked the support of Timor-Leste to Ukraine, declared in international forums,” said an official statement released by MNEC addressed to Tatoli today.

In response, the Minister shared the experience of Timor-Leste and reaffirmed the commitment to the principles of Human Rights, the principle of self-determination and respect to the sovereignty of states, and further expressed Timor-Leste’s support and solidarity to Ukraine – a country which located in East Europe with the capital and largest city is Kyiv.

Lastly, Minister Magno presented to Ambassador Nechytaylio the candidacy of Timor-Leste to the Human Rights Council for the period of 2024-2026.

In the meeting, Minister Magno was accompanied by the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Malaysia, Ms. Joana Veneranda Amaral.

On the other hand, the Timorese executive, on sunday, 6th of march, 2022, Adaljiza Magno was accompanied by the Timor-Leste’s permanent representative to United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Lurdes Bessa and Timor-Leste’s permanent to United Nations in New York, Karlito Nunes and the team held a visit to the cemetery of Sergio Viera de Melo in, Plain Palace, Geneva, Switzerland.

“Before leaving Geneva, we seized the opportunity to visit the memory of Sérgio Vieira de Mello to pay our honor on consideration as one of the persons who had contributed and exercised an important role to our preparation for independence’s restoration as well as reflection to the peace and human rights,” said a note.

“Sérgio Vieira de Mello is a figure very close to the hearts of the Timorese, so the team feels very important to pay tribute,” added.

Sérgio Vieira de Mello (15 march 1948 – 19 august 2003) was a Brazilian United Nations diplomat who worked on several UN humanitarian and political programs for over 34 years.

He was killed in the Canal Hotel bombing in Iraq along with 20 other members of his staff on 19 august 2003 by extremist group attempt while working as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights with the rank of Undersecretary General, and United Nations special representative for Iraq.

Previously, from november 1999 to may 2002, he held the position of UN transition administrator in Timor-Leste.
