DILI, 11 march 2022 (TATOLI) – The Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) has distributed the ballot papers for the realization of the Presidential Election overseas.

“Today, we begin the distribution of the ballots papers for the realization of the presidential election abroad. Thus, on monday, our diplomats would depart for South Korea, the UK, Portugal, Ireland, and Australia to prepare for the march 19 presidential election,” Director-General of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), Acilino Manuel Branco told reporters at the official ceremony of the distribution of the ballot papers at STAE’s office, in Dili, today.

At the ceremony, Branco informed that the Court of Appeal has officially decided to realize the presidential election for Timorese people living and working in Australia.

“As we all know that the Court of Appeals had decided to implement the presidential election for Timorese citizens living in Australia. Therefore, our diplomatic team will be departing to Australia on march 14 to conduct the presidential election,” he said.

Branco said the ballot papers were also distributed to the 13 municipalities, including RAEOA: “Today, we also distribute the ballot papers to the municipalities. Meanwhile, the distribution of the ballot papers to all voting centers across the national territory would be realized on march 18.”

President of the National Electoral Commission of Timor-Leste, José Agostinho da Costa Belo called on STAE to coordinate with CNE and relevant entities to ensure the integrity of this presidential election.

“Timor-Leste was succeeded in supporting Guinea-Bissau’s election. We want to keep setting a good example for other countries. Even though Timor-Leste is a new nation, we need to show that we can run this election successfully,” he said.

As of february 18, STAE registered 7.113 Timorese voters residing overseas, including, 1.487 in Australia, 1.277 in South Korea, 2.229 in the United Kingdom, 1.264 in Northern Ireland, and 856 in Portugal.

STAE has officially announced 1.200 voting centers, including 1.911 voting venters in Timor-Leste and nine polling centers overseas.

“Three voting centers have been set up in Australia, including one in Darwin, one in Sydney, and another one in Melbourne, while in South Korea, voters will be able to cast their vote in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Portugal will have two voting centers, one in Lisbon and another one in Porto. In the United Kindom, two voting centers would be established as well, such as one in London, another one in Oxford. Meanwhile, one voting center would be established in Belfast of Northern Ireland,” he said.
