DILI, 17 march 2022 (TATOLI) – KADALAK institution – a social movement organization with the nature of independence that is committed to sustainable social transformation, has conducted a seminar to reflect on women’s participation in politics and leadership in Timor-Leste.
The Vice president of the KADALAK Institution, Angelina Batista Branco considered Timor-Leste still lacks women’s participation in politics and leadership.
“since Timor-Leste country gained independence almost 20 years . The number of women participations in politics and leadership is still low,” The Vice president of KADALAK, Angelina Batista Branco told reports at City 8, Manleuana, this thursday.
According to data showing women’s participation in politics in Timor-Leste, seven women political parties join the government structure in Timor-Leste. There are 30% of women in parliament nationally, and leader women on municipality authority and it is over 5% women as local.
Mrs. Branco said the KADA’I institution identified that the lack of women’s participation is due to the decision on culture and lack of education.
She stressed that it is more requested for Timor-Leste cultural policy to promote women for any involvement in public activities.
“We initiative on providing a venue for women leaders to share their perspectives on the challenges, success, and lessons learned,” she said
The Executive director of AJAR, José Oliveira said that the responsibility of civic society is to find the challenges faced by Timorese women on political decision-makers.
“Women cannot actively participate in politics due to Timor-Leste adapting to patriarchal culture. Man has more power to join in political activity rather than women,” He added.
The progress shows that among 16 presidential candidates there are four women directly involved.
Mr. Oliveira considers that good progress for women’s participation in public voice.
The local and international organization, institution and academics are required to promote women in capacity.
According to the global survey, there are three things that happen at the global level.
1. focus on jobs condition
2. Salary rate
Various countries making this decision to hinder women are not able to promote women involvement for political and leadership.
She added that based on the global survey, women’s participation in public policy in 2021 recorded 20-30 percent.
