Timor-Leste and South Korea to establish Bilateral Consultation Mechanism

DÍLI, 28 October 2026 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste has decided to approve a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea on the establishment of a bilateral consultation mechanism.
The agreement establishes regular high-level talks between Timor-Leste and South Korea to strengthen cooperation in trade, health, education, science and technology.
“The Memorandum establishes a mechanism for regular bilateral consultations to strengthen relations and cooperation between the two countries, facilitate the exchange of views on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest, and assess progress in cooperation in areas that may include trade, the economy, health, education, science and technology, and agriculture,” said in a statement.
Under the agreement, consultations will take place every two years at the senior official level of the respective foreign ministries, or whenever both parties consider them necessary.
It is recalled that on March 27, 2026, Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, signed a similar memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Ambassador to Timor-Leste Madan Kumar Ghildiyal to establish a bilateral consultation mechanism between the two countries.
