MAF expands diversification of seeds for the local farmer in TL

DILI, 21 march 2022 (TATOLI)- National Direction of Coffee, Plantation and Industry of Ministry of agriculture and fisheries is expanding the diversification of trees within providing seeds for the local farmers in Timor-Leste.

The National Director of Coffee, Plants, and Industry, Donato Salsinha Menezes said the Minister of agriculture and fisheries is diversifying various seeds of trees for local farmers in some different municipalities to ensure the lands protection and economic diversification.

“There are some different types of seeds is provided by the Minister of Agriculture and distributed to the local farmers to cultivate in their lands,” The National Director of Coffee, Plants, and Industry, Donato Salsinha Menezes told TATOLI Agency, in his office, Caicoli, this monday.

He added that there are some different seeds such as coffee, coconut, candlenut, cloves, vanilla, cacao, pimento, and cashews.

Those seeds will be planted on farmer lands composed of Cacao seeds and will be planted in 300 hectares in Hatudu villages Ainaro. Cloves plants in 15 hectares Remexio sub-district. However, it is included on different seeds as vanilla in Noimia Sorin balun and pimento will grow in Liurau, Fahisia, and Asumau villages in Aileu.  Cashew seeds plant 20 hectors in Salele, Suai municipality.

The Minister of agriculture through Coffee, plants, and Industry also provided Coconut seeds to plant in Baucau and Lospalos municipalities.

Mr. Menezes said there are communitarian nursery programs implemented in Gleno, Ermera, and Liquiça municipalities.

It is recommended to the local farmer to access the seeds. The distribution is not effective due to the road accessibility and transportation.

The cultivation of seeds diversification aimed to conserve lands of agriculture due to climate change.

There are 500 households that will benefit from this program and the government is aimed to provide income for farmer’s families in rural areas.

The benefit will be directly contributed to the economy and land conservation. It is known that local farmers in Noimia Sorin balun have gained very significant income from the Vanilla product.

The Minister of agriculture and fisheries is providing 87.000 USD for the nursery program.
