DILI, 04 april (TATOLI)- Timor-Leste should meet principals criteria for trade and negotiation to allow Timor-Leste joint World Trade Organization (WTO) state membership.
The government of Timor-Leste through ministerial lines is evaluated for the Timor-Leste position in the joint World Trade Organization (WTO).
The Coordinating Minister of Economy affairs, Joaquim Amaral said to allow Timor-Leste to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). It is required for some principal criteria to be complied by the government of Timor-Leste.
In order to become a WTO member state, there are certain criteria or requirements derived from negotiation and agreement that each interested member state needs to comply with. There are composed of:
- General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The GATT was intended to boost economic recovery after World War II through reconstructing and liberalizing global trade.
- General Agreement on Trade in Service (GATS). The General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) is a treaty of the World Trade Organization (WTO) that entered into force in 1995. All members of the WTO are parties to the GATS.
- Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)
- Participating in Bilateral meetings focusing on trade
- Participating in Multilateral meeting of WTO
- Participate in Plurilateral negotiation
“On ensuring Timor-Leste joins the WTO. It is most required for more evaluating on the performance on trade, business, economy growth and productivity of local product, infrastructure must be well prepared to allow Timor-Leste to meet the criteria to join WTO,” The Coordinating Economy affairs, Joaquim Amaral told reporters at Suai room, Timor-Leste, this monday.
He added that it is more complex coordination between the ministerial lines to work in affordance. Thus, currently, all competent ministers are composed of the Coordinating Minister of Economy and Affairs (MECAE), Minister of Tourism Commerce and Industry (MTIC), Minister of Justice, Minister of Finance, Secretary of State art, and culture, Central Bank, and others.
It must be required for Timor-Leste to reform the national regimes on national commerce and it must be in line with regional and international.
An important ministerial committee will evaluate the work performed on the preparation progress has been achieved to allow Timor-Leste to join WTO. There is some legislative reformation needed to be made.
Therefore, Timor-Leste must have an adjustment in preparation that must be linked with the world trade organization system.
Thus, Timor-Leste must actively participate in a regional and international meeting focusing the discussion on economic and trade development.
Mr. Amaral is that Timor-Leste still needs more preparation. TL will welcome the WTO members to visit Timor-Leste to directly evaluate the progress of preparation.
There are 58 members of WTO who are currently active in evaluation to see the close infrastructure, the country’s economic development, human resource, natural resources, and others.
