DILI, 12 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The National Directorate of Land Transport (DNTT) of the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) recorded, in the first quarter of this year, 4,522 imported vehicles, of which 3,139 were motorcycles and 1,383 were cars.

The National Director of Land Transport, António da Costa, stressed that these vehicles were imported from Indonesia and Australia.

“Through the registration of vehicles, the management collected, in three months, more than 900 thousand American dollars for the State treasury,””, he said, in Balide, Dili.

It is recalled that the DNTT registered 232,012 imported vehicles in the last two decades – 179,543 motorcycles and 52,469 cars.

António da Costa also revealed that in the previous year the management raised US$2.6 million.

It is recalled that the Customs asked the MTC, in october 2021, to review Law No. 30/2011 on the conditions and procedures to be observed in relation to the importation of motor vehicles.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, José Agustinho da Silva, had said that “Customs had a good idea, because the situation has changed a lot in the last ten years. If this law is not adequate for the current situation, we can revise it to raise more revenue for the State treasury”.

In turn, the leader of the AA, José António Fátima Abílio, also considers that it is necessary to review the law, because it no longer fits the current situation.

“For this reason, the Ministry of Transport and Communications will carry out the review and request the opinion of the Customs and Commerce services”, he said.

The official also underlined that this law continues to authorize the entry into the country of vehicles over five years old – it is necessary to reduce the years of manufacture to three.

According to José Agustinho, when there is a legal update, the Government will be able to collect more revenue.
