“The war in Ukraine led to the substantial increase in the fuel prices in the country. Therefore, through this diploma, we want to stabilize the petrol prices to prevent any harmful consequences to the economy and the people of Timor-Leste,” the Minister of Finance, Rui Augusto Gomes, told reporters after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, at the Palace of the Government, in Dili, today.

He reiterated that Government intervention in petrol and diesel prices is urgently needed to reduce any possible effect and prevent the increase in the public transport fare and other economic activities.

He said the subsidies would also be given to consumers who needed petrol for agricultural and fisheries activities: “The subsidies for agricultural and fisheries activities are called ‘fuel vouchers.”

“The diploma on the government fossil fuel subsidies was set to terminate on july 31, saying it depends on the situation of the petrol prices in the country,” Gomes added.

Meanwilhe, a few days ago, the public transport in Baucau, Lospalos and Viqueque – three municipalities in the part of east Timor-Leste, among others, has paused their activities to transport the people and goods due to the rising petrol and diesel prices.
