DILI, 20 april 2022 (TATOLI)– Independence Leader and Nobel laureate, José Ramos Horta expressed his gratitude for the trust and support of the people of Timor-Leste during the second and final round of the 2022 presidential election.
“ I extend my gratitude to the voters who voted for me, I thank my campaign team and all the volunteers and all who gave so much of themselves to make this moment possible and I am humbled by the trust and confidence that the voters put in me,” Horta told reporters at a press conference Wednesday in Hudi Laran Dili.
Speaking to reporters at today’s conference, Horta appreciated the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE) and the General Elections Commission (CNE) for doing a good job and showing positive progress in the first and second rounds of the presidential election, as well as the hard work of the Timor-Leste National Police ( PNTL) and the Timor-Leste Defense Force ensured peace and stability during the election.
In his statement Horta promised to be a president consistent with the constitution and engage in dialogue with political parties and all entities to share a vision to respond to all crises during the five-year mandate: “I will promise to be a president consistent with the constitution and strive to engage in dialogue with all political parties, civil society, churches, and academia, to share the vision of improving the democratic system and providing consensual governance to respond to the humanitarian, social and economic crisis in the country.”
“Let’s build a peaceful situation to improve the economy of countries affected by the global economic crisis,” added Horta.
In fact, the preliminary results of the second and final round of the Timor-Leste presidential election showed Ramos Horta winning over Lú Olo with 354,246 electoral votes while Lú Olo with 225,063 electoral votes.
