Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa congratulates Horta on Timor-Leste election win

DILI,21 april 2022 (TATOLI)- The President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, congratulated Ramos Horta on his victory in the presidential elections.

According to the statement cited on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic of Portuguese, the Portuguese Head of State called José Ramos Horta this Wednesday to convey his “warm congratulations” on his victory, expressing “sincere wishes of success” in the exercise of noble functions.

It is said that the conversation mentioned the visit of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to Timor-Leste to participate in the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of Independence of the country and to be present at the inauguration of the new President on 20 of may.

“In the year in which the 20th anniversary of Timor-Leste’s independence is celebrated, it is grateful to see the expressive commitment of the Timorese people to the principles and values ​​of democracy, solidarity, progress, dialogue, and, in the external agenda, multilateralism and friendship”, the statement said.

“The note also explains that the two statesmen reiterated that the close and diversified cooperation that characterizes the relationship between the two countries will certainly continue to be deepened, not only at a bilateral level but also within the framework of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).”

Nobel Peace Prize winner José Ramos Horta was re-elected the President of the Republic with 62.09%, with 397,145 votes.

According to the final provisional results, 242,440 voters (37.91%) voted for his opponent, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, out of a total of 859,000 votes.

Remember that, the candidate had already been elected President of the Republic in 2007.
