DILI, 22 april 2022 (TATOLI) – Shashi Tharoor, the Indian former international diplomat, politician, writer, and public intellectual and the former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations who ran for the post of Secretary-General in 2006 congratulated the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta, on his victory in the Timor-Leste 2022 Presidential Election, on april 19.
“I am delighted to express my congratulations and joy at the landslide victory of my old friend, Jose Ramos Horta, as the President for the second time of Timor-Leste,” Tharoor congratulated Horta in a statement posted by the nation’s newly elected President of the Republic, on thursday.
Horta was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Guinea-Bissau Election in 2013, and the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste in 2007.
Tharoor said that he had known Horta since he was traveling to the United Nations in the 1990s to work and battle for human rights and conflict resolution and peace in Timor-Leste: “Since then, he has won the Noble Peace Prize, he has gone on to the President, he survived an assassination attempt, and he is back guiding and leading his country to a better future.”
“All the away from India, I send him warm greetings, best wishes for success. All the best and good luck to you Jose Ramos Horta in the years to come,” he added.
On the same day, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, also congratulated Horta on his victory in the april 19 Presidential Election.
