SDG16 conference: Timor-Leste splits perspective on the prevention of conflict

DILI, April 24, 2022 (TATOLI) – The Secretary-General of the intergovernmental organization of conflict-affected countries (g7+), Hélder da Costa, participated in the Conference on Sustainable Development Goals 16 (SDG16), held in Rome, Italy.

The conference, under the theme “Governance centered on people in a post-pandemic world”, took place between the 21st and 22nd of April.

The statement released by the g7+, highlighted Hélder’s perspectives on conflict prevention and peacekeeping in the organization’s countries, emphasizing the “importance of dialogue and reconciliation as the only accessible way to address existing conflicts and avoid future crises”.

He also underlined the need for strong institutions, including national electoral bodies, as part of building peace and democracy.

“Self-confidence and institutional stability are preconditions for conflict prevention”, he defended.

Hélder da Costa also reminded the other g7+ Member States of the experience of the successful presidential elections in Timor-Leste, shared within the scope of Cooperation between F2F support by the countries of the organization, which consists of sharing knowledge, building peace, and the state.

The conference was co-organized by the United Nations (UN) Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO).

It brought together government officials, representatives of international organizations, academics, and civil society, who discussed various topics within the scope of the SDGs16.

Other participants are the Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marina Sereni, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, and the President of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, who were present.
