DILI, 27 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The Incumbent President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres ‘Lu Olo’ held talks with the newly elected President José Ramos Horta on the preparation for the presidential inauguration ceremony that will take place on may 19, 2022.
It was the first formal meeting between the two national leaders after the first and second rounds Presidential Election.
“The main objective of the meeting was to talk about the handover ceremony which will take place on may 19. We talk about the preparation to have a presidential inauguration ceremony with dignity,” Horta told reporters after he meets with President Lu Olo, at the Palace of the President, in Dili, today.
During the meeting, Horta expressed his respect and admiration for the incumbent President, saying he will cooperate with the outgoing President Lu Olo on national and international issues.
Promoting national dialogue with all parties
At the meeting, Horta also pledged to engage in a national dialogue with all political parties, national leaders, State Organs, and religious leaders to promote democracy, peace, and stability in the country.
“The national dialogue is important to accelerate our economic development. This is because, Timor-Leste will face great challenges in various areas over the next five years, especially in the economic sector. I know, it’s not part of the President’s job, but if there is a humanitarian, economic and socio-political crisis, then it’s part of the President’s responsibility to mobilize the government, parliament, and international community to respond to such crises,” Horta said.
Horta stressed that he has contacted some national leaders, including President Lu Olo and Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, and a few government members regarding the realization of the national dialogue following the presidential inauguration.
