DILI, 29 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The newly elected President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos Horta, and the Coordinator of the current Platform of Eight Constitutional Governments and the Secretary-General of the Revolutionary Front for the Independence of East Timor (FRETILIN), Mari Alkatiri, discuss future coordination with Government to respond to the domestic economic situation.

Horta said his meeting with former Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri was to discuss future coordination between the President of the Republic, the Government of Timor-Leste, and other State Organs to mobilize human resources to respond to the current economic situation to improve the welfare of the people.

“We also discussed the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony and the country’s current socio-economic situation. We cannot control the current economic situation affected by the Ukraine-Russia war and Covid-19. Therefore, the President of the Republic and the Government of Timor-Leste need to work together to prevent the worst impact from happening in this country,” he said.

During the meeting, as a national leader, Alkatiri demonstrated his willingness to cooperate with the President of the Republic to promote national dialogue among all relevant parties.

“Alkatiri showed his willingness to participate in the national dialogue. Earlier this week, as a national leader, President Francisco Guterres ‘Lu Olo’ also pledged to work closely with the new President, National Parliament, and Government to prevent the impact of the world crisis on Timor-Leste’s economy,” Horta said.

The official announcement of the 2022 presidential election results in the second round showed that with 640,967 (99.19%) valid votes counted, Horta won a landslide victory with 398,028 votes (62.1%). Meanwhile, incumbent Francisco Guterres Lú Olo had 242,939 votes (37.9%).
