MoFAC: the Portuguese language plays an important role in sustainable development

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MENK), Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno

DILI, 6 may 2022 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC) of Timor-Leste stated that the Portuguese language plays a key role in sustainable development.

“The Portuguese language, through its increasingly global dimension, plays an important role in the development of various sectors, including education, economy, culture, science, and technology”, Adaljiza Magno, said at the celebration of World Portuguese Language Day.

Magno said that the event “served as a source of inspiration to reach new paths in the sense of satisfying the interests of the CPLP that favor the affirmation of the country in the international scenario”.

“This celebration is a preparation to improve the contribution to the dissemination and promotion of the Portuguese language in a geostrategic, political and economic context”, she said.

Magno also acknowledged that during 24 years of occupation, the development of the Portuguese language in the country suffered enormous setbacks.

The interruption of the Portuguese language during the Indonesian occupation “poses enormous challenges to Timor-Leste, mainly concerning the preparation of human resources, necessary to better contribute to the expansion of the Portuguese language in the world”, she stressed.

So far the celebration of Portugues language day was attended by Ambassadors, honorary consuls of the CPLP Member states, representatives of associated observers, the United Nations, civil society, academic institutions, the private sector, and professors and students were present.
