TradeInvest and Australia’s MDF promote public-private sector dialogue on trade and export

DILI,26 may 2022 (TATOLI)- The Timor – Leste Government‘s Investment and Export Promotion Agency, TradeInvest Timor- Leste, supported by the Australian Government – Funded Market Development Facility (MDF) recently held an advocacy seminar to share information on the role of Timor – Leste‘s Quality Institute (IQTL) and external Trade of Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry (MTCI). This facilitated a useful dialogue between the private sector and the government.

The Director of IQTL Rozito Monteiro explained that this seminar is organized by IQTL and external Trade of MTCI to share information on the role of Timor – Leste‘s Quality Institute (IQTL) and External Trade of the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry.

“IQTL and External Trade of MTCI shared information on the support they can offer the private sector, particularly exporters, to navigate government processes and comply with the regulation. Exporters were able to have a technical dialogue and share feedback with the government on the hurdles they face when developing their export business,’’ Director of IQTL, Rozito Monteiro, told reporters in Hotel Timor, Colmera, Dili this thursday.

Executive Director of TradeInvest Timor – Leste, Arcanjo da Silva, noted that information management is TradeInvest ‘s main value-add for the private sector at all stages of business.

“TradeInvest ‘s mission is to make it easy for investors and exporters to do business in Timor – Leste. One of our key functions is to connect the private and public sector in terms of facilitating and disseminating relevant information about investment and export opportunities, challenges and activities in the country, said the Director of TradeInvest Timor – Leste, Arcanjo da Silva.

The Country Director of MDF in Timor – Leste Drew Johnson inform that MDF and Trade Invest have been working together to promote export and investment in Timor – Leste since 2016.

At the seminar, MDF and Trade Invest signed a third Technical Cooperation Agreement, which is a framework for the two organizations to promote investment and export in the productive sector.

“It is crucial that we support exporters to grow and diversify the economy. Under the new technical agreement, MDF and Trade Investment will continue to work hand in hand to address the challenges faced by Timorese businesses,” said Drew Johnson, Country Director of MDF in Timor – Leste.

Approximately 50 participants including exporting businesses, private sector associations, and development attended the seminar.

Trade Invest expects five exporters to convert into new clients in 2022 and will continue to facilitate advocacy seminars throughout the year to connect the private and public sectors.
