International Environment Day:  SSE urges the public to avoid drilling  underground water

DILI, 06 june 2022 (TATOLI)- The State Secretariat of the Environment urges the public including the international and local companies, to stop drilling the under-groundwater saying it will cause environmental destruction and generate a landslide in the future.

“I urge everyone including the International and local companies to coordinate with the Secretary of the State for Environmental (SoSE) before drilling the under-groundwater. everyone is required to have a license letter before conducting the drilling activity,” the Secretary of State of Environment, Demetrio Amaral, told TATOLI at the office of SSE, Mandarin, Dili on Monday.

According to Amaral “Water is a source of life” therefore it requires proper protection and preservation, therefore the Government should have the right to control the drilling activities.

“If the water from underground is continued to drill without controlled from the government, people will continue to drill the water anytime they want, therefore Government has the right to protect these drilling activities by asking everyone to have an environmental license before doing activities that generate the major impacts on the environment”

According to Amaral, Environmental licensing regulation no 1/2011 highlighted the protections towards human beings, including cultural values.

” Protecting Timor-Leste’s fragile environment is very important to improve the quality of life of the people of Timor – Leste, therefore I call on everyone to protect the environment and preserve the natural resources in Timor-Leste,”
