DILI, 06 june 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, highlighted that the role of the General Prosecutor (GP) is very crucial in defending the fundamental values ​​of the rule of law.

The Head of State, stated this declaration when delivering the speech, this Monday on the sidelines of the ceremony, of the proximity of the 20th anniversary of the General Prosecutor, at the Honorable Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (Kemenlu) on Pantai Kelapa, Dili.

“On this day of fundamental defense of the General Prosecutor, they assume the values ​​of fundamental, to defend the values of law,’’ said Ramos Horta’s speech.

The President of the Republic also mentioned that the General Prosecutors represented the State “at the courts in the exercise of criminal proceedings, in the defense of absentees and powers, in the defense of democratic legality, and the promotion of compliance with the law”.

Horta stressed that the State and the Government need to pay attention to the lives of staff, lawyers, and prosecutors in the justice sector to promote materials as services for citizens’ needs and equal opportunities.

“It is essential that women can support the course for magistrates and public lawyers”, he stressed.

The President of the Republic highlighted those 20 years after the institutionalization of the General prosecutor, that inequality among professionals in the justice sector continues to be a factor of enormous importance.

Attorney General, Alfonso Lopes, said, currently they are 37 magistrates who work at the General Prosecutors during this time.

“Our plan for the future is to increase more human resources and currently nine magistrates, most of them are women, the frequent formation of the Judicial Center”, he informed.

Afonso Lopez, also added that Timor-Leste will sign a note of understanding with the Attorney General’s Office for International Cooperation in criminal matters aimed at combating transnational crime.
