DILI, 08 june 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic has publicly declared that the Dissolution of the National Parliament is not a good option for the current political situation in the country.
“We shouldn’t make the current political situation in the country worst. Therefore, as I have said many times that we need to promote the dialogue with the government and other State bodies to prevent Timorese people from experiencing hunger in the country,” President Horta made the comments at UNTL Campus, in Hera, Dili, on wednesday.
He said theoretically, a politician can make any campaign promises: “For now, I think it’s not a good solution for the current political situation in the country.”
“Timorese people have experienced suffering and we don’t want the situation to get worst. For instance, now, the price of the 5-liter cooking oil is US15. Thus, Dissolution of Parliament is not a good option for the current situation,” Horta stressed.
Horta pledged to collaborate with the International Communities to support the current government.
“My principal role as the President of the Republic is to stabilize the situation so that the government can function well and govern,” said Horta.
Horta recounted that he had realized the first phase of his national dialogue with other State Bodies: “I have met former Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri, the current Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, and the President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres.”
