ASEAN FFM-AEC arrives in TL to assess Timo Leste’s technical readiness  for acceding to ASEAN


DILI, 18 july 2022 (TATOLI) – The ASEAN Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) from the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) arrives in the Nicolau Lobato International Airport Dili today, at 13:20 Timor-Leste hour.

The ASEAN delegation led by Director General of International Trade and Chair of Senior Economic Official Meeting (SEOM), Rath Saravuth, the Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN for AEC, Satvinder Singh including SEOM leaders from all ASEAN member states and colleagues from the AEC Sectoral Bodies and the ASEAN Secretariat.

According to the statement released from the TL office of Foreign Affairs said, since the FFM is a key part of the process for Timor-Leste to become an official member of ASEAN, This FFM on AEC visits to evaluate Timor-Leste’s economic capabilities, alignment with the AEC Pillar and its readiness to become an ASEAN Member. 

“Membership in ASEAN has been a long-standing national priority for Timor-Leste,” the statement said.

It is also said that during the three days visit, the ASEAN entities of AEC will engage with Timor-Leste’s officials from AEC corresponding Ministries/agencies including the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral, Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment, Agency for Technology, Information and Communication, Central Bank of Timor-Leste, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste Association of Hotel Timor-Leste.

“This is an important moment in our application process to ASEAN membership, as it marks the first direct engagement between Timor-Leste’s officials from AEC corresponding Ministries/agencies with the ASEAN entities of AEC,”

It says that the meeting will also be an opportunity to follow up on Timor-Leste’s response to the AEC questionnaire, and the AEC virtual interface and to build a deeper understanding of Timor-Leste national strategic plans and policies, particularly of those deemed as priorities for the AEC. 

“Timor-Leste is pleased to be hosting the Senior Economic Officials, ASEAN Sectoral Bodies, Permanent Missions of Member States to ASEAN, and the ASEAN Secretariat, and we remain committed to ASEAN accession. We wish to express our greatest appreciation to the ASEAN delegates for providing their valuable support throughout the process. The Government of Timor-Leste is glad to have finally conducted the FFMs for the three ASEAN pillars and looks forward to a clear outcome and a positive decision from the ASEAN Member States on the accession of Timor-Leste,”

According to the schedule, the FFM will conduct the assessment for three days in Timor-Leste from 19 to 21 July 2022.

So far the FFM on ASEC comes after the completion of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community FFM earlier this month (July 2022) and the ASEAN Political-Security Pillar in September 2019.
