Ambassador Jianguo: “Having a closer cooperation with China important to develop TL’s economy”

DILI, 26 july 2022 (TATOLI) – The Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Xiao Jianguo said strengthening Timor-Leste cooperation with China is crucial to developing the economy of the country.

Xiao Jianguo made the comments in a meeting with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak at his residence in Farol-Dili.

“Today, I have a meeting with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak. The purpose of this meeting is to follow up on the visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, to Timor-Leste at the beginning of june this year. Timor-Leste and China signed a number of bilateral agreements during the visit of our foreign minister to Timor-Leste. So, my responsibility is to push forward and how to carry out the work for the implementation of these agreements,” Jianguo made the comments after having a meeting with Prime Minister Ruak, at Farol Dili.

He said during the meeting they covered several important subjects, including agriculture, infrastructure, air service agreement, improving community livelihoods, etc.

“We covered a lot of issues. Prime Minister also thinks that it’s very important for Timor-Leste to have closer cooperation with China to develop its economy,” he stressed.

Jianguo said Timor-Leste and China had reached a general principle: “We will do our best to implement the agreement signed by our Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak.”

“The realization of these agreements will bring more benefits to improve the livelihoods of the Timorese people,” ambassador Xiao Jianguo added.

On june 3, 2022, Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Dili.

During the visit, both sides also signed a memorandum of understanding on Belt and Road cooperation, and the implementation of the “one grid, one road, one port” project in Timor-Leste has given strong support to infrastructure construction and improvement of people’s livelihood in Timor-Leste.
