DILI, august 3, 2020 (TATOLI) – Representative of the Association Timorese Student Study in China (ATSSC), Esmeraldito Ferreira asked Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak to discuss with the Chinese Government to repatriate 126 Timorese students to continue their studies in China.

“The purpose of the meeting with PM is to inform the challenges and progress of returning Timor-Leste students to China,” student representative Esmeraldito Ferreira told reporters at the PM resident.

He said Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak would coordinate with the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (CHECC), the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEC), and also coordinate with the Chinese Embassy to help 126 students return to China.

Ferreira said the reason they came to Timor-Leste was that there were problems with the renewal of their passports, some of them were on vacation, and another reason was due to covid-19.

According to Ferreira, due to the pandemic that hit China last year, the Chinese government has not allowed Timorese students to continue their studies in China, however, he said, currently the Chinese government has allowed them to return to China.

“The Prime Minister of Timor-Leste will discuss and coordinate with the Chinese government to facilitate 126 return to study in China,” he said.
