DILI, 10 august 2022 (TATOLI) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Adaljiza Magno revealed that Timor-Leste would negotiate a seasonal worker mobility agreement with the New Zealand Government.
Magno, who has met with New Zealand’s Minister of Labor, Michael Wood, and his New Zealand counterpart, Nanaia Mahuta, said she wanted to deepen the contours of this agreement.
“We were having informal discussions and we are waiting for a response from the New Zealand Government to start negotiations,” Magno said at the Government Palace.
Magno also mentioned that, during his participation in the ASEAN Regional Forum, in Cambodia, she met with representatives of government from the United Kingdom to discuss the possibility of labor mobility.
“I tried to negotiate a bilateral agreement on the delivery of Timor-Leste’s seasonal workers, but British law does not allow labor mobility agreements with any country,” She added.
Magno advised Timorese to notify the Minister of Foreign Affairs before leaving for work abroad, saying this to make aware the Government of their situation abroad.
“I urge all the Timorese to be aware of looking for work in foreign recruitment agencies”, She said.
