DILI, 24 august 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste (PPN), Aniceto Longuinhos Guterres Lopes met with his Indonesian counterpart (Ketua Dewan Perwakilan Rayat- Republik Indonesia/DPR-RI) Puan Maharani, to strengthen ties on economic cooperation.
During the meeting, both house speakers highlighted the importance of strengthening relations between the two countries: “The visit aims to follow up the economic cooperation established during the meeting between both Heads of States, Jose Ramos Horta, and Joko Widodo,” said in a statement released on wednesday.
Guterres and Maharani also discussed future cooperation on how to find solutions for the challenges facing the two countries, including developing a border market and strengthening cultural relations between border zone communities of the two countries.
Both house speakers also discussed issues facing Timorese students in Indonesia, including student visas and university fees.
In addition, Guterres and Maharani also spoke about building cooperation in parliamentary media and protocol.
They also talked about the future cooperation to search for the remains of the Timorese heroes who went missing during the period of the 24-year resistance.
Last month, during a State visit to Indonesia, President Horta and his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo discussed and reached several agreements, including strengthening land and sea connectivity.
For land connectivity, both leaders agreed to launch the bus route between Timor-Leste and Kupang very shortly.
