ASEAN to announce Timor-Leste’s membership by the end of 2022

DILI, 31 august 2022 (TATOLI) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will officially announce Timor-Leste’s membership by the end of 2022.

“Today, we have a meeting with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak to discuss our technical preparation for our accession to ASEAN. This is because, by the end of this year, ASEAN will officially announce Timor-Leste’s membership. Meanwhile, Timor-Leste’s official accession to take place next year,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Adaljiza Magno told reporters after meeting Prime Minister, Taur Matan Tuak, in Farol, Dili, today.

Earlier this month, in his statement during the opening ceremony of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen expressed his confidence that Timor-Leste would join ASEAN in 2023.

“Prime Minister Hun Sen told us during the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting that Cambodia is keenly to announce Timor-Leste’s membership under his stewardship,” said Magno.

ASEAN membership will provide Timor-Leste opportunities in the ASEAN forum to achieve important issues such as economic growth, security, and socio-cultural.

“Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN is a positive sign for our economic growth: “We will need more human resources to work in various sectors,” she said.

Previously, during his State Visit to Indonesia, the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta also expressed his confidence to his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo that Timor-Leste would join the bloc when Indonesia takes over the ASEAN presidency next year.

The membership application was submitted in 2011 and Timor-Leste is currently an observer member of this regional organization.

ASEAN was created on August 8th, 1967, and currently comprises Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
