DILI, 28 september 2022 (TATOLI) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has pledged that he will speak with G20 Member States and world leaders to support Timor-Leste’s membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The statement was said by the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta at the meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, in New York.

“The Secretary-General has always been committed to supporting Timor-Leste in any way necessary. It can provide direct support on behalf of the United Nations and also negotiate with world leaders to support our accession”, said Horta, in a statement

In turn, President Horta thanked the United Nations and ASEAN Member States for supporting Timor-Leste to become a member of the 11 regional organizations.

“I am sure that António Guterres will carry out diplomatic negotiations to help Timor-Leste because he is always in the hearts of the people of Timor-Leste,” he said.

Horta considers António Guterres a qualified leader. Prior to being elected Secretary-General of the United Nations for two consecutive terms, he was Prime Minister of Portugal, where he pressured US President Bill Clinton and European leaders to send a peacekeeping force to East Timor (INTERFET).

In the previous 55th ministerial meeting in Phnom Penh, Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, had stated, that Timor-Leste’s accession was scheduled for the end of 2023.

“The process of Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN is proceeding. I am optimistic that the state will join the organization by the end of next year,” Hun Sen said as quoted by the local press, Khmer Times, on Wednesday.

The Head of Government of Cambodia, currently serving as the rotating president of ASEAN, on 27 July sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Timor Leste, Taur Matan Ruak, in the letter he affirmed his “unwavering support” for the country’s accession to the organization.
