PN ratifies the Millennium Challenge Corporation agreement

DILI, 4 october 2022 (TATOLI)-Timor-Leste’s National Parliament ratified the Millennium Challenge Corperation (MCC) agreement on Tuesday.

“The result of the agreement vote was 40 votes in favor, zero against, and 10 abstentions. the MCC agreement was approved in the National Parliament”, Aniceto Longuinhos Guterres Lopes announced in the plenary session.

In turn, The President of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Magalhaes, respects the PN’s approval of the ratification of the MCC agreement submitted by the Government said:”We would like to express our appreciation to Commission B handles Foreign, Defense, and Security issues, for protecting the interests that have been implemented and explained in detail by the Government with the detailed discussions to provide information,”

The proposed resolution for the ratification of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement was previously approved by the Council of Ministers.

The proposal was introduced by the President of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhaes.

“The agreement was signed on July 19 and will be implemented over five years with a project worth $484. Since the agreement is signed and has been approved by the Council of Ministers, it will be submitted to the Parliament to be ratified,” Magalhaes said after a meeting of the council of ministers at the government palace.

Of the US$484 million, US$444 million would be allocated for the Water, Sanitation, and Drainage (WSD) project and US$40 million for the Education Project.

Water Sanitation and Drainage (WSD) project included the disinfection of national waters, sewage, and drainage systems, the strengthening of institutions and regulatory bodies, and the creation of a solid supply of water and sewage for domestic use that complies with the most advanced engineering and procedures at an international level.

Meanwhile, the US$40 million for the education project would be used for the installation of the Centre of Excellence for Teacher Training to train high school teachers across the country to ensure quality and leadership standards.
