DILI, 16 novembro 2022 (TATOLI) – Timorese geologist of the Institute of Petroleum and Geology (IPG), António de Jesus Araújo revealed that according to the result of the geological survey and studies carried out in the Special Administrative Region of Oé-Cusse-Ambeno (RAEOA), by the IPG geologists had indicated that the region has manganese, marble, and iron-sand.

“During our research in the RAEOA, we discovered minerals such as manganese, marble, and iron-sand, especially in the sub-region of Nitibe and Oesilo. This discovery is important for RAEOA authority to consider when implementing infrastructure development projects in the region,” Araújo said at Dili Convention Centre (CCD).

Manganese is a chemical element with the symbol Mn and atomic number 25. It is a hard, brittle, silvery metal, often found in minerals in combination with iron.

Meanwhile, marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. It is a type of exploited rock normally used for construction.

Iron sand is a type of sand with heavy concentrations of iron. It is typically dark grey or blackish.

When asked if there were chemical elements of gold and silver detected in Oe-Cusse, Araújo said he would not explain it in advance.

“Currently, we don’t have a mineral testing laboratory to detect any specific chemical element of gold and silver. Despite the difficulties, we would look for good solutions to have laboratory analysis of the sample taken from different sites in RAEOA,” he said.

Oktoviano de Jesus, the IPG Vice President said: “The silt, sand, mud, and clay in our streams and riverbed had been collected and sent for laboratory analysis in Canada, Australia, and Indonesia.”

He said the country needed adequate equipment, including a minerals testing laboratory, and an oil, and gas laboratory to conduct the testing of the mineral samples and data analysis.

The President of the RAEOA, Arsénio Bano Paixão, said RAEOA would invite Timorese geologists from the IPG to present the result of the geological research report to the Oe-Cusse people in the very near future.

“IPG accepts RAEAO’s request, and of course, we will present the result of the report to Oe-Cusse people,” Araujo noted.
