DILI, 18 november 2022 (TATOLI)- WaterAid International Organization suggests to the Government and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) conduct a toilet use campaign to raise awareness of the community on the clean environment.
WaterAid’s National Director, Justino da Silva, stated at the celebration of World Toilet day on march 19 with the theme’ Making the invisible visible,”
According to Silva, The government must invest a sufficient budget to develop activities of non-governmental organizations to strengthen the campaign and sanitation related to people’s lives, to do so, he suggested that NGOs promote dialogue with the Ministry of Health to strengthen their campaigns.
“It is important for residents to be informed ” to build baths to ensure a healthy environment,” he said.
He said, WaterAid worked closely with the municipal authorities and residents of Liquiçá and Manufahi on the sanitation campaign and was successful in convincing residents about using the toilets. “All residents in the two municipalities have been using the toilet since the program is implemented,”
According to data from the United Nations (UN), 3.6 billion people in the world do not have access to a toilet.
“We are facing a global sanitation crisis. Today, 3.6 billion people are still living with poor quality toilets which damage health and pollute the environment,” said the UN report.
Inadequate sanitation systems open defection into rivers, lakes, and the ground, contaminating water sources that affect public health.
Safely managed sanitation protects groundwater from human waste pollution. Everyone should have access to a toilet connected to a sanitation system that effectively removes and treats human waste.
“The relationship between sanitation and groundwater cannot be ignored. This World Toilet Day, let’s make the invisible visible,” the UN wrote.
World Toilet Day is held annually on November 19. This has been an annual United Nations Observation since 2013.
