DILI, 22 november 2022 (TATOLI)- United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (MPCM) discussed two important health issues.
The Country Director of UNFPA, Pressia Arifin Cabo said the meeting between the UNFPA and the Gov’t spokesperson Fidelis Manuel Leite was focused on two essential issues including Maternal Health and Youth issues.
“We are concerned with maternal health, therefore we effort to combat stunting and malnutrition, another issue is youth issue, which focused on capacity building where they can have the skill to access job opportunities,’’ The Country Director of UNFPA, Pressia Arifin Cabo told Journalists at Government’s Palace, tuesday.
According to Pressia Arifin Cabo, 15% of pregnant women are most at risk of death due to surrounding circumstances such as malnutrition and stunting.
“Therefore it is important to take care of nutrition for pregnant women and children. Family planning is also important to combating stunting and wasting,”
In the same place, Cabo said, in the 2022 population census, 74% of the population in Timor-Leste is under 35 years old, with this number, She said more things needed to be done to engage the youth in employment, education, and access to knowledge and skill.
“UNFPA comes up with an integrated proposal for discussing with Minister Fidelis to engage in both important issues,” she said.
Minister Magalhães in turn said UNFPA and the Government of Timor-Leste must focus on the work for combating maternal health and youth issues.
“We just carried out the small initiatives on the youth’s program implementation such as youth capacity building. Thus, we should focus on a special program for youth to bring a big impact on their lives,” he said.
