Cabral’s comments followed an increase in the poverty rate in Timor-Leste which reached 47% as recorded in Government data.

“The poverty rate in Timor-Leste continues to increase because the government pays less attention to the agricultural sector, while in World Bank data, 85% of basic needs are mostly imported from other countries which causes inflation to increase and people do not effort to buy due to unstable economic conditions,” he said.

Concerning this issue, Cabral said the government should prioritize the agricultural sector to help reduce the number of poverty in Timor-Leste.

“We have many agricultural empty lands, to reduce the number of poverty the government must prioritize the agricultural sector by involving all local productive farmers to work on empty land with integrated irrigation to grow local food products and raise animals to diversify the economy of the people and country,” Silveiro Cabral told Tatoli in his office, Colmera Dili.

In addition, Government should also provide credit loans for local farmers.

“The government must also help local entrepreneurs and local farmers with ith low-interest rate to support them in building cooperatives to diversify economic growth and reduce unemployment in Timor Leste,”
