DILI, 14 december 2022 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s Charismatic Leader, and former Prime Minister and President of the Republic, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, said he is clear with his position to bring the development of the Greater Sunrise project to onshore Timor-Leste.

“For those who had not accompanied the conciliation process on the maritime borders, I would like to say that as Timor-Leste’s Chief Negotiator, my position was clear that the oil and gas from the Sunrise Field must be piped to Timor-Leste,” Gusmão made the comments after meeting with the Head of State, José Ramos Horta, at the Palace of President.

Gusmão recounted: “We discussed with the Conciliation Commission, Australia, and Joint Ventures companies for six months, in which we decided to develop Greater Sunrise in Timor-Leste’s onshore.”

On march 16, 2018, the new Maritime Boundary Treaty between Timor-Leste and Australia was signed to establish the maritime boundaries between the two countries in the Timor Sea.

“The Maritime Boundary Treaty was signed after we won the whole process. At the time, the Treaty was presented to former Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri and then handed over to the UN Secretary-General,” Gusmão said.

“However, before copies of the Maritime Boundary Treaty reached the hands of the Australian and Timor-Leste Governments, we also have a long discussion on the Greater Sunrise project, in which I defend my position to pipe oil and gas from the Sunrise field to Timor-Leste,” Gusmão recalled.

He said that following the discussion on the Greater Sunrise project, he successfully convinced the President and a lawyer from the Conciliation Commission to visit Timor-Leste: “They visit our Tasi Mane South Coast petroleum project.”

On 12 november, the Minister for Petroleum and Minerals, Victor da Conceição Soares said the Government would continue to consult Gusmão on the Greater Sunrise development project, saying Gusmão was the first person to initiate the plan for the development of Sunrise oil and gas in Timor-Leste.
