DILI, 16 december 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, on friday, awarded the Timor-Leste’s Medal of Merit to the Chinese Ambassador, Xiao Jianguo, after serving a four-year diplomatic mission in Timor-Leste.
Serving a four-year mission in Timor-Leste made him the longest-serving Chinese envoy to Dili.
During his mission, Jianguo worked tirelessly to provide Chinese assistance during Covid-19 and the April Flash Flood.
“China was the first country to provide Timor-Leste with a large number of Covid-19 vaccines and provide assistance to flood-affected communities,” Ambassador Jianguo told reporters at the Presidential Palace.
He said during his mission, with the support of the Chinese government under his leadership, they built an artificial turf football playground, and built warehouses to store food and rice, etc: “We also built digital television networks.”
“I hope that Timor-Leste will advance its development, grow stronger and be prosperous in the future. I wish the Timor-Leste-China bilateral relationship will last longer and the friendship of the two countries will continue to move forward,” Jianguo hoped.
He said the implementation of a number of bilateral agreements signed during the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Timor-Leste is underway: “I hope that my successor will continue to implement these cooperation agreements.”
In june 2022, Timor-Leste Foreign Minister Adaljiza Magno and Wang Yi signed bilateral agreements in four key areas, including Air Service, Agriculture and Fisheries, Health and TV Broadcast.
President Horta thanked the ambassador for his four-year service in Timor-Leste.
Horta said China has done much to support Timor-Leste during the Covid-19 and April Flood.
