DILI, 19 december 2022 (TATOLI) – The Government of Malaysia through its Embassy in Timor-Leste is committed to providing training to Timorese diplomats to prepare the country’s human resources before becoming a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The commitment was stated following the meeting between the person in charge of the Malaysian embassy, Nadia Azura Mohd Nudri, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, Adaljiza Magno at the Foreign Affairs office.

“The two parties discussed assistance to be provided to Timor-Leste during the transition to becoming a full member of ASEAN, as well as the re-establishment of the Technical Cooperation Program, in a manner that Timor-Leste can send junior and high-level diplomats for diplomatic training in Malaysia,” the statement said.

The statement also states that, at the meeting, Nadia Azura Mohd Nudri and Adaljiza Magno also discussed Timor-Leste’s economic diversification, labor mobility and Air Service agreement between TL and Malaysia.

The ASEAN leaders agreed, in principle, to recognize Timor-Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN, to grant the country broader observer status and to permit its participation in all association meetings, including plenary sessions of the Security Council.

ASEAN leaders will formalize a roadmap of objective criteria for Timor-Leste’s full membership, which includes the milestones identified in the report of the Fact-Finding Mission undertaken by the three pillars of the ASEAN Community.
