DILI, 25 january 2023 (TATOLI) – Three political parties – Party for Democratic Unity and Development (PUDD), Timorese Democratic Union (UDT), and Frenti Mudança (FM) met today with the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, to discuss the electoral calendar for the 2023 general elections.
The President of the Timorese Democratic Union (UDT), David Xavier Carlos said that the leaders of the three parties met with the President of the Republic to discuss the date for the parliamentary elections.
“President Horta has informed us that the date of the parliamentary elections is set for may 6 or 12, this year,” Carlos said.
According to Section 86(C) of the Constitution of Timor-Leste, one of the competencies of the President of the Republic is to set the dates for presidential and legislative elections in accordance with the law.
Ricardo Nheu, the acting president of the Frente Mundança said his party is ready to support any decision by Presente Horta regarding the electoral calendar.
Meanwhile, the President of the Party for Democratic Unity for Development (PUDD), Silvestre Sufa alsa said that setting a date for general elections is the competence of the Head of State.
“PUDD is ready for the 2023 parliamentary elections and ready to accept any specific date to be decided by Presdiente Horta,” he said.
