DILI, 30 january 2023 (TATOLI) – The Parliament National today approved a vote of condolences to the family of Shirley Shackleton.
“The result of the vote was 41 votes in favor, zero abstained, zero against”, President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres, announced at the Plenary session.
The Chair of Timor-Leste Independent Revolutionary Front (FRETILIN), David Dias “Mandati”, stated that it was important for the National Parliament to approve a vote of condolences for Shirley Shackleton for her contribution to the independence of Timor-Leste.
The vote of condolence was proposed by members of parliament, Maria Angelina Sarmento, David Dias Ximenes “Mandati” and Mariano Assanami Sabino.
Shirley Shackleton died on 15 January in Melbourne after a long illness. The journalist was born on 26 December 1931 in Plympton, Adelaide, Australia and was the wife of one of the five Balibós, Greg Shackleton, a journalist who was killed by the Indonesian military during the occupation, along with four other journalists. After this death, Shirley Shackleton actively intervened in the struggle for self-determination in Timor-Leste, including several philanthropic actions in Timor-Leste.
