DILI, 02 february 2023 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste has once again succeeded to improve its performance on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) in 2022 as the country ranked 77 out of 180 countries.
In a report released by ‘Transparency International’ on january 31, Timor-Leste’s rank was increased to 77 from 82 last year.
In the Asia Pacific region, Timor-Leste is recognized as one of the countries that have made continued and steady progress in the area of anti-corruption.
Among the ASEAN countries, only Singapore (5) and Malaysia (61) are above Timor-Leste, and among the nine CPLP member countries, only Portugal (33), Cape Verde (35), and São Tomé and Príncipe (65) are ranked above Timor-Leste.
Therefore, Timor-Leste is one of the significant improvers, with the country’s CPI jumping 12 points between 2013 and 2022.
Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães congratulated the efforts made by the Eight Constitutional Government under the leadership of Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak.
“It is one of the important steps that the government has made so far in improving the transparency management of government institutions,” Magalhães told reporters at a press conference, held at the Government Palace, in Dili.
He said that the Government of Timor-Leste, together with the relevant entities, will put efforts to continue to fight corruption in the country.
“I would like to congratulate the government and the relevant entities for their good performance in raising Timor-Leste’s CPI ranking,” he concluded.
The CPI ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale of zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
