DILI, 03 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The Republic of Croatia has expressed interest in supporting Timor-Leste in the area of Tourism, said the Ambassador of Croatia to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Neojsa Koharovic.

“Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak and I talked about how to boost tourism. This is because we could offer Timor-Leste our experiences, especially in tourism development,” Ambassador Koharovic said after a meeting with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak at the Palace of  Government, in Dili.

He said that Croatia is one of the smallest countries in Europe, with only four million people, but is making significant progress in the tourism sector: “There are experiences that we want to share with Timor-Leste on how to revive tourism in this country.”

“We receive 20 million foreign tourists who visit Croatia every year. Thus, we earn about US$20 million in tourism revenues,” he stressed.

Ambassador Koharovic pointed out that the development of tourism will create heaps of employment opportunities in the future, just like in Croatia: “It would be very good for young Timorese to be employed in the tourism sector.”

At the meeting, Ruak and Koharovic also talked about the development of democratic institutions and the resilience of democracy in the county.

He said that Croatia also wanted to establish cooperation with Timor-Leste in the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, saying that they are the backbone of the economies of the two countries.

“For small countries like ours, we also have to be extremely cautious and we have to give every impetus to multilateralism in order to preserve our small countries,” Koharovic concluded.
