STAE prepares to implement braille in the upcoming parliamentary election

DILI, 14 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The Director-General of the Technical Secretariat for Election Administration (STAE), Acilino Manuel Branco, revealed that STAE is ready to implement Braille voting system in the legislative elections for the citizens with vision impairment.

“The Technical Secretariat is cooperating with the association of vision impairment for providing braille training which is provided by development partners and our institution remains to support the vision impairment to voting in the upcoming elections’’ The Director-General of the Technical Secretariat for Election Administration (STAE), Acilino Manuel Branco told TATOLI in the STAE office, Caicoli, tuesday.

Mr. Branco emphasized that the vision impairment people should know about braille voting in the upcoming parliamentary election.

The Social Inclusion Advisor of President Republic, Gaspar Afonso said it is required to have close coordination with the technical Secretariat for Election Administration (STAE) to provide sharing information on braille voting.

“The Association Timor-Leste Vision Impairment (AHDMTL) is ready to cooperate with the government and election organizers. It is to avoid the destruction at polling stations,” he explained

It should be noted that the National Parliament specifically approved the use of ballots in Braille for the blind or low-vision, to ensure the voters vote independently and confidentially.

 Afonso said over 200 blind people know Braille (a tactile writing and reading system used by blind or low-vision people). However, so far there are no ballots available in that system.

The vision impairment association AMDTL has provided training on braille to 520 eyes disable to participate in the upcoming election.

So far STAE has provided over 3800 USD in producing voting templates in Indonesia country and the braille template will distribute to 1.900 voting centers across the country.
