Over 500 people in Hatolia benefit from the clean water supply funded by Japan Gov’t

ERMERA, 18 february 2023 (TATOLI) – Over 500 people in the rural village of Hatolia Village, Hatolia post administrative in Ermera municipality benefited from the clean water supply system under the “project for improving public health condition in Hatolia village, Hatolia post-administrative, Ermera municipality”.

According to a statement issued by Japan Embassy in Timor-Leste, the project was funded by the Japanese government with $84,641 through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security (GGP) scheme.

The projects mainly assist with community infrastructure, including the construction and rehabilitation of school facilities, public clinics, and water supply systems, addressing various basic human needs at the grassroots level.

At the inauguration of the project, the Ambassador of Japan to Timor-Leste, Kimura said the importance of access to clean water will have positive effects on education and gender equality, as children and women can use their time for other purposes.

“Therefore, improving access to clean water will have spillover effects on many sectors, including health, nutrition, education, and gender equality, and we believe that this project has a significant impact on the people and the community.” He said.

According to Ambassador, this project is not only building a water supply system, but also providing training on how to maintain the water supply system, how to prevent diseases, and how to respond to disasters.

“The project constructed a water supply system and provided training on system maintenance, sanitation, disaster, and agriculture, benefiting 500 people in this village. This approach has been very effective and impressive in improving the overall livelihood of the people in this village,” he added.

In addition, Ambassador Kimura also thanked the people in Hatolia village and Timor-Leste Red Cross for the excellent completion of the water supply system.

The project was implemented through the coordination of the Timor-Leste Red Cross and the Ministry of Public Work. Since the first project began in 2000, GGP has implemented 132 projects in 14 Municipalities.

So far the project is inaugurated by the Ambassador of Japan, Kimura, and attended by the Representative of the Ministry of Public Work, Timor-Leste Red Cross, local government officials, relevant authorities, and residents.
