DILI, 07 march 2023 (TATOLI)—The Institute of Petroleum and Geology (IPG), today launched a quality network system for monitoring and detecting earthquakes in Timor Leste.

“The system has been implemented and today we launched to disseminate and improve its quality, to ensure that the quality fulfills the international standard, which is similar to the Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysics. The network system for earthquake detection is the first launching in Timor – Leste and can detect earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 and below,” Vice President of IPG, Oktoviano Viegas de Jesus told reporters, at City 8 Comoro, Has – Laran Dili, on tuesday.

During the launching of the network, IPG received support from the Government of Japan through JICA. The support includes four Broadband Seismometers, and 13 SMA strong-motion accelerometers that have been installed in 13 Municipalities and these devices are used to detect ground motion.

“The tool must be connected to the internet network, so we are working with TIC Timor Leste, to be able to access this,” he said.

According to Viegas, the tool can also detect earthquakes with a magnitude smaller than 4.0.

“Most earthquakes happened on the land, which can destroy the infrastructure if the design of the infrastructure in Timor Leste does not suit the conditions of the feasibility study,” he said.

Meanwhile, the President of the Civil Protection Authority (APC) Ismail Babo said that APC and IPG will work together to share information regarding the prevention of natural disasters through the system that has been installed.

“With this opportunity I thanked IPG, related ministries, and also cooperation partners, to cooperate even better, by installing a quality system so that it can prevent future disasters in Timor – Leste,” he concluded.
